No surprise here but I’ve been running from winter this year. If you follow me on Instagram you probably saw I was here and there and everywhere all throughout January and February. How you say? I work from home and it definitely has a lot of perks including being able to travel whenever I want to.
I will say two of the trips were planned in advance because I loath the winter but the other two just happened because of work and the timing was pretty much perfect. This is one of the many reasons why I love working from my laptop. I can travel anywhere and still make that coin which is something I used to dream of doing. I’m extremely grateful!
So let’s go back to winter being my least favorite time of year, especially in NY. I knew last year in 2018 that it was necessary for my mental health to be in a warmer climate during the coldest time of winter. I’ve lived on the East Coast my entire life so my feelings for this season were nothing new lol.
I don’t know what is about the beginning of the year but so much happens in November and December. Time is literally flying with all of the holidays quickly passing by and and then BOOM it’s New Years. I typically party hardy for New Years Eve so the first day of the year I’m usually not feeling too hot. On top of not feeling my best I always put so much pressure on myself to prove to myself that I’m starting the year off being super productive.
I don’t realize the amount of pressure I’m putting on myself. So much that I get extremely overwhelmed and depressed. These feelings mixed with the lack of sunshine, grey clouds and bone chilling weather is a recipe for disaster. I told myself 2018 was the last time I was going to start my year feeling down in the dumps.
California is my happy place. The weather isn’t perfect in California in January or February because it’s rainy season but there’s always sunshine and warm weather at some point throughout the week. Also, it’s better than being in 20 degree and below weather which is the weather New York is usually serving at the brick of winter.
One of my best friends just so happens to live in LA so I booked a trip in advance so I could miss a large chunk of the winter and everything else winter likes to throw at us lol.
I know I speak a lot about being positive, but when it’s cold and grey outside I have to dig that much deeper to keep that positive energy flowing. Who can agree?
The sun figuratively and literally gives me life. I’m a summer baby so it’s only natural that I gravitate towards the sun and reasons why California will always be my second home. I love everything about it despite a handful of New Yorkers or ex-Californians who currently live in NY who scrunch their faces at me when they hear this.
I’m going to totally get into the outfit I’m wearing but this topic was certainly something I wanted to address. I really want you all to learn more about me and who I am as a person. I can only share so much through social media but my blog is certainly a place I want to let those walls down a little bit more and bring you more into my world.
I’m not perfect in any way and have struggled with some things that I’m going to slowly begin to share every now and again to hopefully give hope to others. I want anyone else who feels the same way to know their feelings are valid and they’re not alone. When I was feeling like crap at the beginning of 2018 and all the other previous years, it was very bad and I felt so alone. Despite having all of the things that sound great when you write them down — You know those things that should make you feel happy but they don’t? I knew something was off but I could never really put my finger on it.
Sometimes you feel like crap because you just do. Sometimes you can’t put it into words or explain to a friend or family member why you feel a certain way. You know what you feel and you know it’s real. I’ve definitely suppressed emotions in my past which was not healthy. Now I’m learning to feel all emotions, the good, the bad and the ugly. I would have never understood this if I didn’t start going to therapy. It took awhile to go to therapy but once I did it improved my life for the better. It sounds so simple writing this out right now but whew chile ‘twas a process and a journey that I’m still discovering. I know that I’ve come a long way and I’m learning how to manage my depression that gets really intense in the winter. This may sound familiar to some. Some of you know it as S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) but I like to call it the “winter blues”.
I started to recognize a pattern year after year. The winter time was a hard time for me every winter and I was lacking motivation, uninspired, sad, irritable, overwhelmed, stressed, you name it! This year I wanted to put my mental health first and decided to try something new. It really helped me kick my winter blues and my year started off on a positive note. When I went to Cali, Florida and Vegas I was able to relax, catch up with a friend, I did absolutely nothing on some days, sat by the beach and watched the waves, got plenty of vitamin D, got inspired, learned more about myself, had alone time and now I’m back in NY feeling extremely recharged.
I feel like we should be aware of when we need to recharge and get away even if it’s visiting family or booking your dream vacation to take a break from reality. I feel like if we don’t take that time to recharge we’re only hurting ourselves in the long run.
Mental health is super important and something that I never focused on or took seriously until I wanted to make improvements in my life and become a better person. If there’s a positive way to improve your mental health, big or small, do it! Do it for you, for your future and for your overall happiness.
I returned to NY from traveling on March 1st and it felt great to be home. I missed home and I was excited to get back into my little routine. I love Brooklyn and really missed it. I always joke around and say the perfect place would be if New York and California merged together. Wherever that utopia is, let me know please and thank you!
Now let’s change gears a bit and get into this outfit! First of all shoutouts to @clarendonco for hooking me up with this all white vintage Levi’s denim button down. I have nothing like this in my closet so I’m excited to have this dope staple piece.
It’s still a little chilly out so I’m still incorporating turtlenecks into my wardrobe. I paired my all white turtleneck with the all white denim button down and I love it! It’s super cozy for a really clean and refreshing look.
If you’ve been following closely you’ll see I posted a bunch of photos in my matte black Buffalo London’s so it was only right I got them in a lighter color as well!
I mentioned in my previous blogpost having a dark pair of shoes are necessary for your wardrobe and a light pair of shoes are just as necessary. I already have a white pair of vans but I always wanted a creme colored shoe. My vans are getting pretty worn so I wanted to have more shoe options. I can always find a reason to buy new shoes, I get it from my mama lol.
I always say this but when you fall in love with a brand of clothing that fits you well as well as a shoe brand, get it in multiple color options if you can because at least you already know what you’re buying. I really wanted this color and looked everywhere to find an affordable price. I finally found them in my size and got them right away because the summer is coming and I have a feeling these are going to sell like hot cakes.
I wore these with my green chinos from ASOS as well my tan crew socks. Since I had white on white on the top I wanted to have creme on creme on the bottom to balance everything out, keeping that smooth look.
